Institute of Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine (IBMM) is a non-governmental organisation (non-profit NGO) supporting life-science scientists and conducting independent research in biomedical sciences.

ABOUT IBMM

The Institute of Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine (IBMM) is an independent research institution that conducts basic and applied projects in biomedical sciences. We support life-science researchers in developing their transferable skills and contacts with industry and government in order to help them identify as well as answer the medical and health needs of the society. The overarching long-term goal of the IBMM is to support the advancement of science and education through research, development, and innovation. In doing so we hope to provide knowledge required to solve key problems in human health.

While the research at the IBMM centres around biotechnology, medicine, cell and molecular biology and laboratory diagnostics, we specialise in highly interdisciplinary projects requiring multiple areas of expertise. Importantly, we catalyse innovation by supporting young scientists and engineers at all stages of their careers both in establishing their independent research groups and through providing mentoring.

Official opening of the Research and Development Center

On September 23, at 25 Kampinoska Street in Gdańsk, a private Research and Development Center was officially opened, which houses, among others, the Institute of Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine. The new infrastructure will allow for the implementation of further daring biomedical projects. The activities of the research center focus on supporting innovative implementation projects. The years of IBMM activity have allowed for the development of a cooperation network with many scientific research units and enterprises, thus enabling interdisciplinary and international cooperation. An element of the event was the presentation of the results of projects in which IBMM was involved.

Another part of the event agenda was the signing of a letter of intent inaugurating the Pomeranian Diagnostic Cluster. The role of the cluster is to actively increase the competitiveness and innovativeness of the diagnostic sector, to create favorable conditions for conducting research and operational activities, and as a result to stimulate socio-economic growth in the Pomeranian Voivodeship.

The initiative is to create a platform for establishing cooperation and coordinating activities that will serve the development of companies and institutions in the voivodeship, related in any way to the broadly understood medical diagnostics.

The proposal to create a letter of intent on establishing cooperation for joint activities in the field of diagnostics at the ISP4 Council was created due to the actions of its leader - the Pomeranian Regional Chamber of Commerce.

The event was attended by representatives of local government authorities, representatives of business and science institutions, and entrepreneurs.

The National Center for Research and Development has concluded the 6 / 1.1.1 / 2020 competition, Measure 1.1 "R&D projects of enterprises", Sub-measure 1.1.1 "Industrial research and development works carried out by enterprises".

The National Center for Research and Development has concluded the competition 6 / 1.1.1 / 2020, Measure 1.1 "R&D projects of enterprises", Sub-measure 1.1.1 "Industrial research and development works carried out by enterprises." Among the projects selected for co-financing, there were as many as two projects, with a total value of over PLN 14 million, in which the consortium partner is the Institute of Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine.

The first of the co-financed projects "PeptAlm - a platform based on artificial intelligence to study peptide-protein interactions from virtually generated peptide libraries" was implemented as part of a consortium with Qsar Lab Sp. z o.o. - the project leader, in partnership with the Institute of Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine and Nanoexpo Sp. z o.o. The project will focus on increasing the competitiveness of the consortium members through the development and implementation of the bioinformatics platform "PeptAIm" for the creation of molecular diagnostic tests, allowing the selection of ligands (peptides) with a high affinity for target proteins. The result of the project will be a product innovation characterized by new features on the Polish and foreign markets. The recipients of the "PeptAlm" platform will be primarily laboratories, research and development units developing and/or producing diagnostic tests, public and private research centers, research institutions, as well as the pharmaceutical sector, conducting research on protein-protein and/or protein interactions peptide. The total value of the project is PLN 5,697,197.41, and the co-financing received is PLN 4,310,901.46.

The second project entitled “PostureScan - a machine learning-based system for the analysis and interpretation of posture defects in children and adolescents” concerns the development of technology and methodology for the non-invasive analysis of posture defects in children and adolescents. The created system, based on machine learning methods, will indicate the symptoms of foot defects, posture, and spine deformities, thus enabling the prevention and minimization of the persistence of posture defects and the deterioration of deformation. “PostureScan” will enable nurses, physiotherapists, and doctors to efficiently and effectively assess children's posture, find posture defects and deformities at an early stage. The system will minimize possible mistakes during the visual assessment, thanks to which we will obtain a new quality in preventing the consequences of posture defects in adulthood or the accumulation of deformities. Thanks to the developed system, screening tests in kindergartens, primary and secondary schools will be faster and more precise, which in turn will reduce the cost of the test, enable more precise analysis, and tailoring rehabilitation to the individual needs of the patient. The project, carried out in consortium with Lab Control Sp. z o.o. - the project leader, in partnership with the Institute of Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine and Gormanet Sp. z o.o., received funding in the amount of PLN 7,217,653.06, and its total budget is PLN 8,482,620.72.

IBMM was again appreciated by The National Centre for Research and Development! From the European Regional Development Fund, together with UroScan Ltd., we received a grant of over PLN 8 million to develop a fast and non-invasive BladderDx diagnostic test for the early diagnosis of bladder cancer. Comprehensive work will last until 2021 and will result in the implementation of a test that will support doctors not only in the diagnosis of bladder cancer but also in the study of treatment progress and recurrence of the disease. This is another IBMM’s grant, thanks to which we are increasingly expanding our research portfolio.

We are constantly inviting ambitious scientists to cooperate and to jointly implement projects. If you want to implement your own project, do not hesitate and contact us!

Microbiologically active nanocomposite anodic coatings on aluminum alloys

Microbiologically active nanocomposite anode coatings on aluminum alloys, under Measure 1.2 of the Operational Program of the Śląskie Voivodeship for 2014-2020 co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund; I: Modern economy; Action 1.2: Research, development and innovation in enterprises.

Aim of the project: development of a technology for the production of microbiologically active anodic coatings. The aim of the project will be achieved by determining the parameters of electrodeposition processes of copper, gold and silver particles inside a nanoporous matrix produced anodically on the surface of aluminum details and determining the dependence of the antibacterial and antifungal properties of these coatings on the method of conducting the process.

BladderDx

Rapid and non-invasive test for the early diagnosis of bladder cancer under Measure 4.1. Intelligent Development Operational Program 2014-2020, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund; IV: Increasing the scientific and research potential; Action 4.1: Research and development work; Sub-measure 4.1.2: Regional scientific and research agendas

Aim of the project: to improve the diagnosis of bladder tumors by introducing a non-invasive and specific test. The aim of the project is to conduct an effective diagnostic method that allows to monitor the course of treatment in people after surgery, and at a later stage, a method that allows for early cancer detection. The principle of operation of the test will be based on the detection of the presence of proteasome markers in the urine, the presence of which may be the result of a bladder tumor.
